Centro de Física de Materiales (CFM) is a research centre focused in Materials Science. Born in 1999 as a joint initiative between Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and Universidad del Pais Vasco – Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV-EHU), our long term aim is to push forward the frontiers of knowledge in our areas of expertise, by putting together stable teams with a record of excellence in scientific research. CFM quality work has been awarded by the Basque Government through the Basque Excellence Research (BERC) program. CFM headquarters is located in Donostia-San Sebastián, and offers a well dimensioned, high quality working environment with modern facilities (building is operational since 2010), both for experimentalist and theoreticians. You can find a description of our facilities here. The center is strongly committed to maintaining and developing the Science and Technology Network in Europe, by doing high-quality research with world-wide visibility, training new generations of scientists and highly skilled professionals, and collaborating with other institutions. We are also aiming to have an impact in the direct transfer of knowledge to our society and economy, by getting involved into scientific outreach programs, collaborating with industry, and developing our own spin-off companies. CFM currently hosts more than 100 professionals, among which 17 belong to the UPV/EHU permanent staff, 14 to CSIC permanent staff, and 4 have joined CFM through IKERBASQUE Research Professorships. The research groups also incorporate 26 junior researchers, and 31 graduate students. Researchers receive continuous support from a 11-persons strong team, in administrative, technical, computing and project management activities. At CFM, research activities are grouped along four main lines, although the structure remains fully horizontal and we actively seek cross-linked, multidisciplinary research. The four lines are Photonics, Polymers and Soft Matter, Chemical Physics of Complex Materials and Electronic Properties at the Nanoscale.
