A laboratory specialising in the characterisation of hydrogen content and storage capacity in metallic and porous materials. It comprises a high-sensitivity elemental hydrogen analyser, physical gas adsorption equipment to determine surface area and porosity (BET), and a high-pressure adsorption analyser to obtain P–C–T (Pressure–Composition–Temperature) isotherms. It enables the study of everything from trace amounts of hydrogen (<1 ppm) to high-pressure absorption/adsorption processes, providing key information for the design of materials, coatings and safe hydrogen storage systems.
Equipment
- High-sensitivity hydrogen elemental analyser (detection limits below 1 ppm) with a graphite furnace and inert atmosphere. Physical gas adsorption apparatus (primarily N₂ at boiling point) for obtaining isotherms and determining specific surface area and pore distribution (BET model and others). High-pressure adsorption analyser with calibrated-volume cells for gases such as H₂
- Capable of generating PCT isotherms at different temperatures and determining reaction enthalpies.
- Gas management and control system
- Vacuum, temperature and pressure with sensors and software for data acquisition and analysis
- Measurement of hydrogen content in metallic materials and coatings with detection limits <1 ppm. Characterisation of the surface area and porosity of adsorbent materials (BET) for gas storage applications. Determination of P–C–T isotherms for hydrogen and other gases at different temperatures
- Calculation of enthalpies and storage capacities. Comparative evaluation of new materials and treatments for hydrogen storage and capture. Support for design projects for tanks, pipework and components optimised for H₂ in coordination with CEIT’s hydrogen embrittlement laboratory
