This laboratory provides specialized analytical support and advisory services to the livestock sector in the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC) in the fields of animal health and food safety.
It is accredited by ENAC (the Spanish National Accreditation Body), with an extensive scope covering microbiological, immunological, and molecular methods.
Part of its work focuses on developing and validating diagnostic techniques for emerging and re-emerging diseases.
The laboratory has specialized equipment for histopathology, microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, and parasitology. It also has a dedicated unit for hematological and biochemical testing of samples from various animal species.
Equipment
The laboratory is equipped with specialized instruments across several areas:
- Histopathology: Tissue embedding equipment, microtomes, grossing stations, and microscopes.
- Microbiology: VITEK system for bacterial identification and antimicrobial resistance testing, miniVIDAS system, conventional microscopes, and incubators.
- Immunology: ELISA reader, fluorescence microscope, and incubators.
- Molecular biology: Real-time and conventional thermal cyclers, and automated nucleic acid extraction systems.
- Parasitology: Fume hood and microscopes.
- Hematology and biochemistry: Dedicated analyzers for blood cell counts and biochemical testing.
