An integrated platform for researching and evaluating the optimal management and treatment of industrial streams, including water and sludge from urban sources and various industrial sectors.
The platform offers extensive capabilities for investigating and evaluating biological technologies (carbon and nutrient removal, moving-bed systems, membrane technologies, granular systems and sludge biomethanisation) and physicochemical technologies (precipitation, filtration, microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, membrane distillation, electrodialysis, advanced oxidation and solvent extraction).
It also includes process simulators for individual process units and integrated systems, such as water supply networks and complete urban and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). These tools support process design, the integration of new technologies and operational optimisation, taking into account process, energy, economic and environmental parameters.
Equipment
- Analytical laboratory for water and sludge characterisation, equipped with UV-visible spectrophotometers, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, a Soxhlet extraction system, ion and gas chromatography, and optical and electron microscopy.
- Pilot plants for biological water treatment, with the capacity to develop new designs tailored to each project.
- Pilot plants for nutrient recovery and struvite production.
- Pilot plants for organic sludge biomethanisation (from 5 L to 1 m³) and biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests.
- Filtration systems at different scales (microfiltration, ultrafiltration and nanofiltration), as well as membrane distillation and electrodialysis equipment (ED, EDR and EDBM).
- Advanced oxidation equipment, including UV lamps, ozone generators and electrochemical oxidation reactors.
- Testing for the research and validation of water and sludge treatment technologies for urban and industrial applications.
- Simulation studies of water supply networks, individual process units and complete urban or industrial wastewater treatment plants, supporting process design, the integration of new technologies and operational optimisation, including process, energy, economic and environmental parameters.
