The aim of this platform is to provide a high quality mass spectrometry service for the different research groups in CICBiomaGUNE and to the nearby interested scientific community. The specialized laboratory is equipped with modern instrumentation and offers different ionization techniques for the analysis of small molecules to complex biomolecules. The platform service is equipped with modern technology: Acquity UPLC coupled to a LCT XE time-of-flight mass spectrometry detector with electrospray ionization source (ESI) and a ICP-MS (iCAP-Q , Thermo).


LCT XE time-of-flight mass spectrometry The LCT Premier™ XE time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer features a ZSpray™ source with electrospray ionization (ESI) and modular LockSpray™ interface. This instrument delivers high sensitivity, resolution, and exact mass measurements for LC/MS applications. Its fast data acquisition rates and automated workflow features match the requirements for MS detection under UPLC conditions.

Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography Acquity Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) is a highly robust and reproducible system which allows working at higher separation efficiencies with a much wider range of linear velocities, flow rates and backpressures. The use of sub 2 µm particle chemistries improves dramatically the peak resolution and offers significant advantages over today’s HPLC. The system is equipped with a binary solvent manager, an auto-sampler and a photodiode array detector.

ICP-MS (iCAP-Q , Thermo) Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a robust, high sensitivity and reproducible analytical technique. ICP-MS quantifies most of the elements in the periodic table (metals and several non-metals) with detection limits at ppb / ppt range (or bellow ppt range).  iCAP-Q ICP-MS is equipped with collision/reaction cell and Kinetic Energy Discrimination (KED). This technology is very useful to remove most of the isobaric interferences that can affect to the limit of detection of several elements.

UltrafleXtreme III This MALDI (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization) tandem mass spectrometer features the latest advances in MALDI TOF/TOF technology. This high performance MALDI-TOF/TOF provides high sensitivity, accurate mass measurements (1 ppm) and high resolution (up to 40.000) for a wide range of sample types (proteins, polymers, glycans, lipids and other biomolecules) and applications (top-down and bottom-up sequencing for proteomics, MALDI tissue imaging, MALDI surface analysis, structural elucidation by MS/MS...).

ImagePrep ImagePrep provides highly reproducible matrix preparations for MALDI Imaging with a fully automated process. On tissue, a lateral resolution of 50 μm is achieved and high quality mass spectra for localization of biomarkers in tissue slices are obtained.
