Description

A platform for the development and validation of new materials, components, stack designs, and Balance of Plant (BoP) components (recirculation strategies, separators, and seals) for low-temperature electrolysis technologies, including alkaline, PEM, and AEM electrolysis.

The laboratory includes test benches equipped with programmable power supplies and electronic loads, in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) monitoring, thermal management systems, Balance of Plant equipment (water and gas treatment, and H₂ safety systems), and diagnostic instrumentation.

These capabilities enable the assessment of system performance and degradation.

Equipment

  • Three-electrode cell and potentiostat, together with interfacial contact resistance (ICR) measurement equipment for ex-situ testing of different components (bipolar plates, electrodes, membranes, and coatings)
  • 4.5 kW PEM electrolyser, 25 cells, 400 cm²
  • 1 kW PEM electrolysis test bench, 10 cells, 35 bar, 100 cm²
  • Approximately 1 kW AEM electrolysis test bench, 5 cells, atmospheric pressure, approximately 100 cm²
  • 5 kW alkaline/AEM electrolysis test bench, 6 cells, 30 bar, 500 cm²
Services
  • Development and validation of materials and components for advanced electrolysis technologies (alkaline, PEM, and AEM), including electrodes, membranes, bipolar plates, porous transport layers (PTLs), and coatings
  • Electrochemical testing of materials in simulated electrolyser and fuel cell environments
  • Dynamic testing simulating real-world renewable energy generation profiles, identification of degradation mechanisms, and extension of electrolysis stack service life
  • Generation of high-quality data for CFD models, techno-economic models, and Energy Management Systems (EMS)
  • Support for companies in the design and sizing of electrolysis plants and the definition of flexible operating strategies
