This 900 m² facility provides a safe, controlled environment for working with biological agents that require Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) containment.
It incorporates several laboratories and experimental areas designed for work with both large animals and laboratory animals.
These facilities are essential for maintaining disease surveillance, control, and/or eradication programmes targeting diseases that affect domestic livestock and wildlife. Some of the best-known examples include avian influenza, animal tuberculosis, transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, and Q fever.
All these diseases are considered zoonotic, meaning they can affect both animals and humans.
Equipment
- Five laboratories, each measuring 20–24 m², equipped with Class II biological safety cabinets and basic laboratory equipment.
- Large-animal experimental area: Four rooms of 18 m² each, adaptable to different animal species, with access to a necropsy room.
- Laboratory-animal experimental area: Three rooms measuring 10–16 m², adaptable to different types of cages and equipped with ventilated rack systems, with access to a procedure room.
- Testing and handling of biological agents under BSL-3 containment conditions
- In vivo and ex vivo studies under biocontainment conditions, using large animals and laboratory animals
- Trials involving vaccines and other immunostimulants
- Pathogen detection
- Pathogenesis studies
- Lesion characterization and quantification
- Availability of animal models for various diseases
