Description

A unit dedicated to characterising the formability and mechanical properties of metallic materials (particularly sheet metal) under controlled temperature and atmospheric conditions. It comprises a high-capacity universal testing machine, a dedicated system for sheet metal formability testing, and a digital microscope for the rapid inspection of surface defects and fracture surfaces. It complements the capabilities for the design and manufacture of new alloys (e.g. via the VIM furnace) with mechanical validation tests under conditions representative of in-service conditions, driving the development of more sustainable steels and metalworking processes for the metallurgical, automotive, construction and energy sectors.

Equipment

Universal mechanical testing machine (≈600 kN) with a wide range of test speeds (≈000005–508 mm/min) and the capability to operate with an environmental chamber / oven for temperature and atmosphere control. Sheet metal formability characterisation equipment with a double clamping die and a punch with adjustable geometry and hardness to determine formability limits and sensitivity to defects. Low-magnification digital microscope (approximate zoom 1×–5×) with automatic camera and focusing for rapid characterisation of surface defects, surface quality and fracture surfaces.

Services

Static mechanical testing (tensile/compressive etc.) under controlled temperature and atmospheric conditions to simulate service conditions. Characterisation of the formability of sheet metal (forming limits, crack initiation, defects) for new steel grades and forming processes. Preliminary and rapid analysis of surface defects and fracture surfaces in R&D projects and industrial cases. Support for the design and development of new, more sustainable alloys and processes by linking these to design/manufacturing results (e.g. VIM furnaces) and validating their mechanical behaviour.
