Descripción

The plant tissue in vitro culture laboratory focuses on developing procedures for the propagation of species of forestry interest, primarily conifers.

Organogenesis protocols have been developed for the main Pinus species of interest in Europe, as well as other conifers, including sequoia and Cryptomeria, which are of interest in the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC) as alternatives to Pinus radiata.

In recent years, research has focused primarily on developing and optimizing somatic embryogenesis in species of the genus Pinus.

The experience gained with this technique has enabled its use as a model for inducing tolerance to different types of stress associated with climate change. The molecular and omics mechanisms through which plants derived from primed tissues adapt more effectively to stress have also been investigated.

In addition, methodologies have been developed for the conservation of valuable cell lines and genetic resources, ensuring the availability of elite plant material for future use in forestry plantations.

Another research area in recent years has been the use of in vitro culture to eliminate viruses in species such as grapevine. Predictive models have also been developed to assess the likelihood of successful grafting in grapevines.
