Solid-state NMR can provide very accurate information about the structure and the dynamics of molecules and ions in electrochemical materials. This is crucial for the understanding and the development of energy storage devices. Solid-state NMR is a sensitive technique to short-range order that surpasses traditional techniques of materials characterization as X-ray diffraction or electron microscopy in the study of amorphous materials and complements these techniques in the study of crystalline materials. Furthermore, solid state NMR can provide dynamic information with atomic specificity in highly disordered and even fully amorphous materials. The technologies of the solid-state NMR platform at the CIC Energigune are specially designed for the characterization of the materials used for energy storage including in-situ measurements during device operation and variable temperature studies (-120ºC to +400ºC).BRUKER AVANCE III 200 MHZThe Avance III 200 MHz was installed at CIC in March 2012. It is a wide bore, low magnetic field magnet dedicated to the study of paramagnetic materials which are a frequent component in battery and supercapacitor electrodes.Available Probes:
- Double resonance 1H/19F-X DVT CPMAS 1.3 mm probe that can reach ultra-fast spinning speeds of up to 65kHz.
- Double resonance 1H-X DVT CPMAS 4 mm probe, that can reach temperatures up to 400ºC and spinning speeds up to 18 kHz.
- Variable temperature measurements between 400ºC and -100ºC.
BRUKER AVANCE III 500 MHZThe Avance III 500 MHz was installed at CIC in April 2012. It is a wide bore magnet especially suited for non magnetic materials where high resolution is desired.Available Probes:
- Double resonance 1H/19F-X DVT CPMAS 1.3 mm probe that can reach ultra-fast spinning speeds of up to 65 kHz
- Triple resonance 1H-X–Y, DVT CPMAS 2.5 mm probe that can spin up to 35 kHz
- Static wideline H-X probe for in situ electrochemical studies
- Variable temperature measurements between 300ºC and -100ºC.
Measurements The solid state NMR platform at CIC Energigune is open to external services for public institutes and private companies. We can provide very detailed structural information on a large variety of materials (organic, organometallic, polymers, alloys, biological, etc.) in a large variety of states (crystalline, amorphous, soft matter, etc.). Our clients range from small companies to multinational groups working in a large variety of fields, from pharmacology to automotive industry. Our solid state NMR characterization services are specially focused on the improvement of material performances, the understanding of material degradation processes, post mortem analysis, and the chemical determination of unknown samples. Training If you are interested in learning more about the technique, we also offer external workshops and training courses: Training Course. For a maximum of 15 participants. It includes lectures and practical sessions. Familiarity with undergraduate level solution-state NMR is assumed. The exact dates will be announced at least two months in advance on the website of the platform. Small-group practical training for up to 4 participants. An intensive hands-on course adapted to the needs of the group. The duration of this training is variable (1 to 3 days typically). Individual. In the frame of a collaboration project, we can organize visits to your center to present the technique and explain the theory behind our experiments.
