Descripción

This laboratory is designed to validate and optimise the electrical performance of marine renewable energy converters (wave and tidal energy) and wind turbines using advanced emulation techniques in a controlled environment.

The infrastructure is based on a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test bench that can emulate real resource profiles (wind and waves) and reproduce them as rotary mechanical motion, while the converter's electrical subsystem operates under real conditions.

This enables control algorithms, power electronics hardware, and conversion systems to be tested without requiring trials in open water or at operational wind farms, reducing costs, risks, and development times.

The laboratory reproduces different grid conditions (weak grid, strong grid, and islanded operation), simulates faults, verifies transient responses, and tests the complete control system under critical conditions before field deployment.

Equipment

  • HIL test bench with a rotary mechanical emulator.
  • System for injecting dynamic resource profiles (marine and wind) based on real-world data.
  • Platform for connecting actual power converters.
  • Programmable controllers for adjusting control parameters and evaluating peak and average power and efficiency.
  • Simulation of abnormal grid conditions, including transients, weak-grid conditions, and islanded operation.
  • Software and hardware interface for comprehensive controller validation.
  • Electrical performance and grid interaction testing systems.
Servicios
  • Software and hardware validation of converters for marine and wind energy applications
  • Tuning of controllers and control logic to optimise efficiency and stability
  • Pre-field testing in a safe and reproducible environment
  • Assessment of system behaviour under extreme grid conditions
  • Testing for product certification or pre-certification
  • Technical training for companies in the energy sector
  • Support for developers in advancing system maturity before industrial scale-up

Aimed at:

    - Research groups in the control of renewable energy.
    - Technological developers who want to validate their energy extraction system in a controlled environment prior to in field testing.
