IKERLAN’s laboratory ensures that intelligent systems operate safely and predictably in applications where failure is not an option, including industrial machinery, autonomous vehicles, and critical infrastructure.
Its work focuses on two complementary areas: equipping machines with reliable environmental perception by combining multiple sensors through redundant and verified methods, and ensuring that AI models making critical decisions are safe and certifiable.
Perception systems are validated under the same adverse conditions they will encounter in real-world operation. The AI models developed can be accompanied by validation evidence aligned with functional safety standards, including IEC 61508, ISO 26262, and IEC 62061.
The laboratory is directly integrated with IKERLAN’s ENAC-accredited cybersecurity laboratory, AI laboratory, and connectivity laboratory.
Equipment
- Reference perception sensors: high-resolution cameras, thermal imaging, 3D LiDAR, and short- and long-range radar.
- SIL 2-certified camera with integrated processing (IP67/IP69K protection, operating temperature from −40°C to +70°C, and Ethernet connectivity up to 1 Gbit/s).
- X-in-the-Loop (MiL, SiL, HiL) validation platforms.
- High-fidelity 3D simulation infrastructure for synthetic data generation.
- Multi-sensor data fusion for robust and redundant perception
- Validation of perception systems under adverse conditions, including occlusions, sensor failures, and extreme environmental conditions
- Detection of anomalous situations and implementation of safe response mechanisms (fail-safe and fail-operational)
- Development and validation of explainable AI (XAI)
- End-to-end trustworthy AI lifecycle management, from design through certification
- Integration of AI into functional safety architectures (IEC 61508, ISO 26262, and IEC 62061)
