Descripción

This facility enables experiments investigating plant–microbe and plant–soil interactions using microcosm chambers or microfluidic devices.

Data are collected using automated microscopy systems that capture root and microbial development over time. Quantitative measurements are then obtained through image analysis.

Equipment

  • Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printer — for manufacturing moulds used in soft lithography.
  • Fused deposition modelling (FDM) 3D printer — for manufacturing microcosms and microscopy components.
  • Photolithography system — a custom-built instrument for the in situ photopolymerization of soil-like substrates.
  • Granular substrate photopolymerization equipment.
  • 100 W CO₂ laser cutter with a working area of 700 × 500 mm.
  • Microcosm and microscopy chamber fabrication systems using double-sided adhesive tapes and custom microscopy components.
  • Transparent soils — custom materials and protocols for preparing model soils suitable for live microscopy.
  • Custom-built motorized microscopes.
