Animal Production Research groups

The team from the Animal Production Department of NEIKER is developing R&D projects aimed at improving the sustainability of farming systems, especially those in the Basque Country. This is intended to help improve the productivity, competitiveness and efficiency of livestock-raising activities from the enhancement of local resources (livestock breeds, pasture, raw materials, etc.) through production systems adapted to the environment and socio-economic environment, mainly aimed at obtaining products of a differentiated quality. For that reason, our projects are focused on:

  • Animal reproduction
  • Conservation of genetic resources
  • Genetic improvement programmes
  • Animal Food and Nutrition
  • Applied Ethology
  • Animal Welfare
  • Development of tools to support decision making
  • Modelling and simulation
  • Characterisation and design of production systems
  • Grazing and use of natural resources
  • Evaluation of ecosystem services
