Polymer Characterization Service forms part of POLYMAT Foundation Research Facilities of the University of the Basque Country, and came into being as a result of the major boom there has been in polymer materials over the last few decades.
The aim of this research group is the synthesis of new materials with controlled microstructure which can contribute to the development of technologies in XXI century society: sustainability, energy and health. Since this research group has been established different research groups have been implemented in fields such as batteries development, organic catalysis, organic electronic, disperse polymers, biopolymers and membranes.
The aim of this platform is to provide a high quality mass spectrometry service for the different research groups in POLYMAT and to the nearby interested scientific community. The platform service is equipped with modern technology: Autoflex Speed time-of-flight mass spectrometer with a Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization source (MALDI). The MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry technique allows the measurement of molecular mass distributions (MWD), monomer unit, head groups identification and dispersity determination.
Besides, in order to improve the resolution and quality of the MALDI spectra, we have incorporated a fraction collector to the SEC instrument allowing to fractionate and separate the polymer samples.

Applications in the field of synthetic polymers require equally good performance in both, small to medium mass range as well as high mass analysis. The Autoflex Speed series is well prepared for either of these tasks. This mass spectrometer is equipped with:
